A final shot by Gustaf Nilsson in the 89th minute gave SV Wehen Wiesbaden a late 1:0 away win on the 24th match day of the 3rd Liga. At SV Waldhof Mannheim, SVWW extended its unbeaten run to eight games in a row.
Due to suspensions and injuries, SVWW manager Rüdiger Rehm had to make four changes to the XI that started in the home fixture against Türkgücü München. Ahmet Gürleyen moved into the back four for the suspended Florian Carstens, Jakov Medic moved from centre attack to the number six and replaced Marc Lais, suspended after a yellow card. Gustaf Nilsson took the striker position. Maurice Malone and Kevin Lankford played along the wings for Lucas Brumme and the injured Dominik Prokop.
Only 30 seconds into the game, Mannheim popped up dangerously for the first time in the red and black penalty area. Dennis Jastrzembski passed to Marcel Costly, but SVWW keeper Tim Boss got his foot to the ball. After a furious start by the hosts, the Red and Blacks took control. Phillip Tietz and Malone had a first few header opportunities thanks to their solid passing game, but they failed to put Waldhof keeper, Timo Königsmann, under pressure (6’).
Mannheim relied mainly on quick switchover opportunities against their confident guests, generally allowing SVWW to have it their own way up as far as the centre line. However, two deep lines of defence ensured that the SVWW attack wasn’t left with much space in the final third of the pitch. In addition, sharp passes to the swift strikers continued to be a problem. After quarter of an hour, Dominik Martinovic passed once again to Costly, but Boss managed to block it well for a corner.
After that, the match was played for the main part in midfield. Given the intense duels, there were no more goal opportunities until later in the first half. It wasn’t until a few seconds before the break that the guests found themselves in a hairy situation again. From the right, Costly put the ball into the box, and Jastrzembski hit a flat shot from 14 metres out. Yet again, Tim Boss got his foot to the ball – the teams went into the break scoreless.
With a fresh touch and renewed energy – Brumme came on for Malone – the Red and Blacks started with increased attacking power. Almost five minutes after the start of the second half, Paterson Chato had a top-class goal opportunity, but his diving header was stopped by the superb reflex reaction of Waldhof keeper, Königsmann (51’). Nonetheless, the Red and Blacks were taking the initiative more and more.
In the first few minutes of the second half, Waldhof found it more difficult than in the first half against a good and aggressive pressing game. Despite this, SVWW were unable to capitalise on their slight advantage.
About 20 minutes before the end of the game, the team from Mannheim finally reported back for duty. First of all, Medic blocked a shot on goal from Jestrzembski for a corner, and shortly after that Boss saved once again to keep a clean sheet for the guests. Marco Schuster took a shot from a short distance but Boss’ right leg shot out again and blocked the ball (70’).
Mannheim made use of their recovery and improved their finishing shot while the Red and Blacks lacked the necessary precision in attack. However, the Rehm XI didn’t lose heart but earned the next goal opportunity with their strong willpower and willingness to keep running. Through Brumme who was running the ball in the Waldhof penalty area, the ball came to Nilsson who prevailed against two opponents and passed to Tietz.
