SVWW narrow defeat to Champions in season finale
Pros |
History: When SVWW were founded back in 1926, SpVgg Grether Fürth were at the very top of the German football pyramid. It was in this year that the Cloverleafs won their second German Championship. Their first came in 1914, while a third and final triumph was celebrated in 1929. However, such success wouldn't last forever. Over time, the club have developed into something of a mainstay in the second tier, having played a total of 30 seasons in the division. Since 1997 - with the exception of one season in the Bundesliga in 2012/13 - the Franconians have called the second tier home. In fact, throughout their history, they've picked up more points in the 2. Bundesliga than any other club - making them the runaway leaders of the all-time league table. Alemannia Aachen are a distant second, 86 points behind Fürth.
Stadium: Playmobil-Stadion, Trolli Arena and now Sportpark Ronhof | Thomas Sommer: various sponsorship deals have meant the home of the Cloverleafs has gone through its fair share of memorable names down the years. The ground, located in the Ronhof area of the city that gives it its name, was inaugurated back in September 1910 with a match against German Championship holders Karlsruher FC which attracted a crowd of 8,000 spectators. Nowadays, Sportpark Ronhof can hold up to 15,606 spectators.
Coach: Former midfielder Stefan Leitl was named head coach of the Franconians back in February 2019. His record in the dugout is just about tipped on the positive end of the scales: 13 wins, 12 defeats and 10 draws. He previously worked at FC Ingolstadt, where he started out coaching the U17s before rising through the ranks to take charge of the first team. The 42-year-old can look back on a playing career that saw him represent Bayern Munich, 1.FC Nuremberg, SpVgg Unterhaching and Ingolstadt.
Head-to-head: To date, the 2. Bundesliga is the only competition in which SV Wehen Wiesbaden and SpVgg Greuther Fürth have faced one another. In the two seasons in which the Red & Blacks were in the division between 2007 and 2009, three of the four matches contested between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw. SVWW's last home match against the Cloverleafs dates back to 19 April 2009. On that day, the Franconians came away with a narrow 1-0 win - just as they did back in September 2019, when the two sides met for the first time in the current campaign.
