SV Wehen Wiesbaden were condemned to a late defeat by FC St. Pauli on Matchday 17. Manuel Schäffler’s 70th-minute equaliser cancelled out Viktor Gyökeres’ 23rd-minute opener, but two late goals from Henk Veerman (86) and Gyökeres (91) ensured FCSP ran out 3-1 winners in front of 29,000 fans at the Millerntor-Stadion in Hamburg.

SVWW boss Rüdiger Rehm made only one change to the team that started last time out, with captain Sebastian Mrowca returning to central midfield in place of Jeremias Lorch.

Both teams threw caution to the wind straightaway and sought to attack their opponents in the early stages. The first opportunity fell to FCSP in the third minute, but Maximilian Dittgen managed to clear after Viktor Gyökeres had whipped in a dangerous cross.

Both teams showcased their footballing abilities in the opening minutes of the match. Marcel Titsch Rivero and Daniel-Kofi Kyereh combined to create the first chance for SVWW after seven minutes, but St. Pauli keeper Robin Himmelmann succeeded in intercepting their lovely one-two at the last second. The next chance came at the other end, culminating in St. Pauli midfielder Finn Ole Becker having a strike from 18 metres out saved by SVWW custodian Heinz Lindner in the eighth minute.

As SVWW and the Kiezklub began to adjust to each other, the match become more subdued and chances were few and far between. In fact, it was some time before either team posed a threat in front of goal. But when he was called into action 15 minutes after making his first save, there was little Lindner could do to keep out Gyökeres. The Swede’s shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off an SVWW defender on its way into the net. 1-0 to the hosts after 23 minutes.

A second for the Kiezkicker looked likelier than an SVWW equaliser in the period that followed. The Red & Blacks no longer looked at ease on the ball as they had done in the opening minutes and as a result they played themselves into trouble on occasion. St. Pauli were worthy of their lead and Lindner was almost beaten for a second time on the half-hour mark, but fortunately Henk Veerman’s header sailed just wide of the far post.

The Kiezkicker had settled into a better rhythm on the bumpy surface and came close in the 40th minute, although Gyökeres could not get on the end of Ryo Miyaichi's cross. Waldemar Sobota was surprised to see the ball run through and he failed to convert from five metres, meaning the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break.

The second period started in much calmer fashion than the first, though there was a good chance after 10 minutes when Titsch Rivero tested Himmelmann for the first time. His powerful effort was kept out by the FCSP shot-stopper, however.

SVWW started to pose more of a threat going forward but they were repeatedly denied by the outstanding Himmelmann. The gloveman made a lightning stop to turn an excellent Aigner volley – which had been teed up by a beautiful Dittgen ball – behind for a corner in the 58th minute.

However, SVWW were eventually rewarded for their persistence in the 71st minute when the otherwise excellent Marvin Knoll misplaced a pass and Manuel Schäffler curled home from the edge of the penalty area to tie the scores at 1-1.

St. Pauli immediately sought to re-establish their lead, but SVWW looked solid in defence and repeatedly tried to make an impact going forward too. That said, it was the Kiezklub who had more of the possession and goalscoring opportunities in the closing stages. In the 84th minute, Luca Zander broke through down the right but his effort was comfortably saved by Lindner.

However, the pressure eventually became too much to bear and, two minutes after the Zander chance, Veerman got the better of several SVWW defenders to make it 2-1 to the hosts.

SVWW threw everything forward in an attempt to salvage a late point, but St. Pauli had plenty of counter-attacking opportunities and Gyökeres managed to kill the game on the break in the first minute of stoppage time, hitting a low effort from 16 metres that flew into the far corner of the SVWW net.

SVWW: Lindner – Ajani, Mockenhaupt, Dams, Chato, Dittgen – Aigner (Shipnoski, 70), Mrowca (Röcker, 88), Titsch Rivero (Knöll, 62), Kyereh – Schäffler
